Getting geared up for Autumn......

As much as we'd like to ignore it, the nights are definately getting longer and although we are currently enjoying unseasonably mild weather, this can quickly change.
Autumn is the time to think ahead and prepare your property for the Winter months that are around the corner.
Lets start outside. You will need to make sure that your roof is in order. Any broken slates, tiles or fittings will need to be replaced, give the guttering a once over clearing out any leaves as you go and check that the chimney is in working order. Don't forget to give the chimney sweep a call as well to make sure everything is ready to go as soon as there's that chill in the air.......
Should you have been carrying out a landscaping project over the Summer, now is the time to give that 'final push' to get it all finished before everywhere gets too wet / muddy / icy to work with. Check that your patio, driveway and steps are all satisfactory and carry out any repair work necessary. Consider lighting these areas in preperation for those darker evenings.
Your fireplace is about to become the most important feature in the house once again but may need a little attention first. You may have been wanting to update it for a while - well, now is the time. This
could come in the form of a new fire surround, a different hearth or you may be thinking of changing to a log burner. Either way, stock up on logs and ensure that any seating is positioned to benefit from the generated heat.
Take a look at your flooring. Floorboards can be checked over and replacing any ill-fitting boards can help to eliminate draughts. Traditional stone floors although both beautiful and practical, can feel cold so maybe invest in a rug or too to help bring cosiness and warmth. In fact, the introduction of textured soft furnishings can not only look stylish but help to keep the chill out so pile up those cushions, blankets and throws too!

Mirror, Mirror On The Wall.......

Introducing our new stock of wooden framed mirrors.
Mirrors have been used since the Middle Ages and over this time they have developed from shiny, slightly convex metal discs to the glass examples that are used today. They have become part of everyday life and are used for their decorative qualities as well as their practicality.
A well placed mirror can create a focal point within any room and , should the room be small, one mounted in a position to reflect light can give the impression of a great deal more space.
When choosing a wooden framed mirror, a couple of things should be considered. Firstly you need to think of the size that will be needed. Bear in mind the proportion of the room where it will be and the way in which it will be hung.
It is also beneficial to match your new mirror to your existing furniture so the type of timber, colouring, style and finish should all be taken into account.
Our new range of mirrors are varied in size and design from impressive, large scale examples to smaller, decorative pieces.
All of the wooden frames have been handmade using traditional techniques and reclaimed timber such as Victorian pine or original, aged oak.
We are also looking into providing a bespoke service to provide mirrors exactly to your requirements.
These will all be coming onto our website soon but please feel free to contact us or call in to take a closer look and choose the right mirror for you. And remember, once you are happy with your purchase and it has pride of place at home, a little vinegar and water will keep it sparkling!

Garden Ideas For Spring

It really has been a wet and miserable start to the year but one thing that can keep us going is to plan what to do with the garden this Spring.
As usual at this time of year, people have begun to predict trends for 2014 and many gardening articles have already referred to the use of salvaged materials within garden design.
A reclamation yard such as Winchcombe Reclamation is a great place to look for a little inspiration and you will find numerous ideas for garden planters here.
A traditional choice would be a reclaimed stone trough. These are available in many shapes and sizes, all showing natural character and wear from years of use as animal troughs.
Alternatively, you may prefer a metal container such as these galvanised tubs. These make great planters and come with a screwcap drainage hole and carrying handles. We also stock large galvanised water troughs if you are looking for a bigger
container - these could also be used as part of a water feature. Less conventional planters such as wash tubs, sinks and chimney pots can also be found.
Of course, our stock here at Winchcombe Reclamation is ever-changing and as we approach Spring we have many unique garden items available. From Victorian cast iron planters to fountains and pool surrounds. You may find decorative iron work that can be used to trail plants over, or an original staddle stone or mill stone to create a focal point. And don't forget our extensive stock of reclaimed building materials that can be worked into the design. Maybe some edging for the herb garden, some reclaimed bricks or cobbles for a pathway or York flagstone for paved areas. The possibilities really are endless.
Take a look closer look at our website or call in to visit.
We also have a pinterest account where you'll find some ideas.....
