Getting geared up for Autumn......

As much as we'd like to ignore it, the nights are definately getting longer and although we are currently enjoying unseasonably mild weather, this can quickly change.
Autumn is the time to think ahead and prepare your property for the Winter months that are around the corner.
Lets start outside. You will need to make sure that your roof is in order. Any broken slates, tiles or fittings will need to be replaced, give the guttering a once over clearing out any leaves as you go and check that the chimney is in working order. Don't forget to give the chimney sweep a call as well to make sure everything is ready to go as soon as there's that chill in the air.......
Should you have been carrying out a landscaping project over the Summer, now is the time to give that 'final push' to get it all finished before everywhere gets too wet / muddy / icy to work with. Check that your patio, driveway and steps are all satisfactory and carry out any repair work necessary. Consider lighting these areas in preperation for those darker evenings.
Your fireplace is about to become the most important feature in the house once again but may need a little attention first. You may have been wanting to update it for a while - well, now is the time. This
could come in the form of a new fire surround, a different hearth or you may be thinking of changing to a log burner. Either way, stock up on logs and ensure that any seating is positioned to benefit from the generated heat.
Take a look at your flooring. Floorboards can be checked over and replacing any ill-fitting boards can help to eliminate draughts. Traditional stone floors although both beautiful and practical, can feel cold so maybe invest in a rug or too to help bring cosiness and warmth. In fact, the introduction of textured soft furnishings can not only look stylish but help to keep the chill out so pile up those cushions, blankets and throws too!
